Writing For Change presented by SLCC Community Writing Center: Does change in democracy require civic dialogue? If so, where is it and who gets to talk? Or write? Join the CWC, the Salt Lake City Public Library, and guests to learn techniques of writing for change. Come with a concern or topic for upcoming elections or events and stay to write a letter with the help of CWC writing coaches. Cost: Free, but registration is required. To register call 801-957-2192. Wednesday, October 16th

Elizabeth Smart book reading: Elizabeth Smart will speak about, read from, and sign her book, “My Story.” In this autobiography, Elizabeth tells her story for the first time, talking about her kidnap, abuse, and eventual rescue, and her journey from victim to advocate to prevent crimes against children. Details: Starts at 7 p.m. at the Salt Lake Community College Grand Theatre (1575 S. State, Salt Lake City).

Filma screening of The Square: The documentary “The Square,” which chronicles the activism, unrest and revolution happening in Cairo’s Tahrir Square. Director Jehane Noujaim (“Control Room”) and producer Karim Amer will take place in a post-film discussion, via Skype, with moderator Doug Fabrizio (of KUER’s RadioWest). Thursday, October 17th

Nicole Hardy book reading: Nicole Hardy will read from and sign her memoir “Confessions of a Latter-day Virgin,” a funny and intimate look at a woman in her mid-30s trying to reconcile her sexual life with her faith. Details: Starts at 7 p.m. at the King’s English Booksshop (1511 S. 1500 East, Salt Lake City).

Saturday, October 19th

9th Annua NAMI Walk: The National Alliance on Mental Illness Utah (NAMI Utah) will hold its 9th annual NAMI Walk. Details: Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the walk will be at 10 a.m. Registration is also available online here.
