Film screening, The Man Who Changed the World: A documentary about a Soviet-era military officer who held the fate of the world in his hands during a 1983 nuclear missile alert. Presented by the Utah Film Center, in partnership with the Utah Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons in honor of Hiroshima/Nagasaki Remembrance Day. Details: Starts at 7PM at Salt Lake City Public Library (210 E. 400 South, Salt Lake City).

Film screening, Austenland: A women’s-only screening of “Austenland,” the comedy directed by Utah filmmaker Jerusha Hess based on Utah author Shannon Hale’s book. Hess and Hale will be in attendance for a post-screening Q-and-A, moderated by Gina Barberi of X96. Hale will sign books after that. Details: Starts at 7PM at Broadway Centre Cinemas (111 East 300 South, Salt Lake City).

Wednesday, August 7th

FEMINIST RISE UP! Intersectionality, Feminism, and Resistance (organized by WOMEN FOR A CHANGE): This is the official shout-out for our NEWEST panel in the Listening to Women Series.

Women’s empowerment and social change as a whole, hinges on the consciousness of women, young and old, their understanding of the importance of unity and the combined struggles of the oppressed in our own communities. Details: From 6-9PM at the the Salt Lake City Public Library (210 East 400 South, Salt Lake City).

National Tongan American Society Of Utah Friendly Island Festival: Come and join the National Tongan American Society of Utah for its Annual Friendly Island Festival, Aug. 8-9, 2013 at Fairmont Park. Live music,food,workshops and games. Also during the festival will be a rugby tournament. Visit here for information. Utah Refugee Coalition – Asaad Al-sahed: The Utah Refugee Coalition will sponsor a presentation and discussion by Asaad Al-Sahed about the conflict in Syria.
