Reebok Drops Rick Ross for Date Rape Lyrics

In response to mounting pressure from women’s rights groups and online activists, Reebok announced today that it will no longer work with Rick Ross. The controversy surrounding Ross comes from song lyrics “Put molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it / I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain’t even know it.” Ross issued a tepid apology after being called out on his troubling lyrics, but never expressed any serious remorse (his Twitter apology is abysmal: “I dont condone rape. Apologies for the #lyric interpreted as rape. #BOSS”).

In a statement released today, Reebok told Billboard:

“Reebok holds our partners to a high standard, and we expect them to live up to the values of our brand. Unfortunately, Rick Ross has failed to do so. While we do not believe that Rick Ross condones sexual assault, we are very disappointed he has yet to display an understanding of the seriousness of this issue or an appropriate level of remorse. At this time, it is in everyone’s best interest for Reebok to end its partnership with Mr. Ross,” Reebok said in a statement to Billboard.

The severed partnership is just one more example of the power of online activism! Rape apologist beware, we are watching!
