Community Engagement and Advocacy Coordinator


Planned Parenthood Association of Utah (PPAU) is looking for a highly motivated, responsible, outgoing, creative, pro-choice person with political experience to lead the organization’s field organizing in Utah. The Community Engagement and Advocacy Coordinator will work closely with the Vice President of Public Policy to conduct grassroots activities while building capacity and infrastructure. The Coordinator will identify and organize a new generation of members and supporters, educating them about the politics of women’s health care, and building a powerful organization that will support the goals of Planned Parenthood to ensure that all women have access to the health services they require. The Coordinator is responsible for planning and coordinating all Planned Parenthood field activities in support of legislative and electoral goals in coordination with other departments across the organization. Proficiency in online communications and electronic grassroots communication is a must.
Coordinate with the VP of Public Policy to implement a field organizing and community engagement program designed to increase the number of overall supporters for Planned Parenthood and reproductive health and justice in Utah.
• Develops strategic outreach and field plans for increasing PPAU and Planned Parenthood Action Council (PPAC) visibility and capacity throughout Utah.
• Identify and recruit members, grassroots activists, and volunteers; managing phone banking, canvassing, and community events; educating and preparing grassroots activists for legislative and/or electoral activities; and other activities related to grassroots development and mobilization.
• Provides support to existing campus and youth programs and assists in the establishment of new programs in colleges and universities within the state and/or region.
• Develop and coordinate young professionals group(s) to advance PPAU’s mission, engage the public, and raise funds.
• Serves as a member of PPAU’s Public Affairs team; responsible for developing and implementing state and federal advocacy activities to be included in PPAU’s Public Affairs Strategic Plan.
• Indentify community events and/or health fairs to staff outreach booths each calendar year. Identify the purpose of the booth and ensure staff, volunteers, and activist reaches the intended objective. Ensure message and branding is in place at all community events.
• Coordinates regularly with VP of Public Policy in developing legislative strategy and activities at the grassroots level to advance PPAU’s public policy agenda.
• Assists VP of Public Policy in identifying key legislative and electoral targets and develops and implement strategic grassroots activities to advance PPAU’s objectives in these areas. Works with staff, interns, volunteers, and others as needed in developing plans and identifying resources needed for legislative, electoral, and issue campaigns.
• Provide personnel management, development, and supervision for field organizing staff and interns including; hiring, defining job objectives and skill set requirements, training, performance reviews, and discipline as necessary.
• Assist with selecting, training, monitoring, and nurture volunteers in accordance with agency policy and procedures.
• Recruit, develop, and activate political activists around federal and state legislative and electoral action.
• Assist with outreach to and maintaining relationships with local coalitions, interested stakeholders, and other potential issue partners.
• Communicate and coordinate with health center and education staff on a regular basis to identify opportunities for outreach, patient recruitment, voter education, and activist mobilization.
• Compile agency statistics, including EEO data for the agency Affirmative Action plan, related to volunteer participation.
• Demonstrates knowledge and respect for diversity in daily activities and in program development.
• Accepts direction and supports agency objectives, goals and values.
• Perform any and all special assignments as requested by the CEO.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Two (2) years experience with volunteer coordination, field organizing, or other relevant field, which includes overall program planning, development and evaluation.
• Experience working with and managing/supervising volunteers, activists, or others.
• Ability to effectively work independently and with teams on multiple, simultaneous, diverse tasks while being attentive to detail and accuracy.
• Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal and relationship-
building skills.
• Experience with volunteer data management and online applicant tracking systems preferred.
• Support of the mission, vision and work of Planned Parenthood Association of Utah.
• Knowledge of reproductive rights issues and community organizing strategies.
• Knowledge of use of Catalist and/or VAN voter files preferred.
• Bilingual English/Spanish is desirable.
• Available to work flexible hours, including weekend and evenings as needed.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to reliable, fully insured automobile.
• Ability to lift and transport agency supplies and presentation materials up to 25 pounds.
• Travel is required.
• Must be able to travel to various sites throughout the state. Some occasional travel outside the state including overnight stays required. Must be able to sit/stand for extended periods of time. Requires standing, walking, stooping, carrying items, boxes and equipment weighing at least 25 pounds.
• Speech and Written Communications: Must have the ability to verbally communicate with volunteers, coworkers, and the public in general, and audiences of various ages and intellectual abilities as well as other customers, such as donors, elected officials, candidates, etc.
