Today marks the 41st anniversary of the landmark case, Roe v. Wade (1973). Roe legalized abortions under some circumstances, and solidified a woman’s right to privacy. Every day there is a new attack on the decision, and conservatives hope to overturn the case at every juncture, but today is a day to celebrate. Put on your party dress or slacks, and celebrate with friends. Celebrate the fact that we still have access (albeit limited) to decide when we want to start families. Celebrate for the progressives who fought for your rights before you, and those that will come after.
Celebrate out loud to show people that access is important. It isn’t shameful. It isn’t dirty. Access to reproductive care is essential.
Tomorrow, when you’re done celebrating, remember that just because 7 in 10 support Roe, it doesn’t mean the fight is over. Take a moment to donate your money or time to your local Planned Parenthood or NOW chapter, and help maintain our reason to celebrate.
