5th Annual Day of Awareness in the Campaign to Eliminate the “R-Word”

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me. My mom taught me that saying when I was a child. She, like countless other parents, was feeding me this oft used platitude because someone at school had bullied me.  She lied to make me feel better. Words hurt, and for some people nothing is more painful than the R-Word. Today is the “Spread the Word to End the Word’s” 5th annual day of awareness to stop the use of the R-Word in everyday speech.

Language is packed with values, expectations, and histories. Ignoring the complexities of language is ludicrous, and today is a great reminder that using thoughtful language is a powerful way to build inclusion. Head over to the campaign site to sign their pledge and learn more about how you can help to create a world that doesn’t  shame people with physical and intellectual disabilities.
