23 Self-Care Tips for Activists

If you are an activist, you’re probably holding down a job (or multiple jobs) to pay the bills, plus working on side projects, taking care of kids/parents/both, and trying to maintain some semblance of a “normal” life. You work your ass off to make the world a better place, and there’s always some set back, one more thing to do, and one more thing to say, but this is a reminder of the ol’ adage, “Put your oxygen mask on first before helping others.”

You deserve some self-care. Most of us long for tropical vacations and hour-long massages, but there are easier (read: cheaper) ways to show your body and mind some love. I dare you to read through this list and pick one, just one, of these self-care items.  Pick one of these treats and act like it’s just as important as your sixteen other daily obligations:

1. Take a bubble bath or a long, hot shower

2. Go for a walk in a place you feel safe

3. Read a non-essential book

4. Watch your favorite television show or movie–analysis be damned!

5. Eat a treat–no calorie counting, no guilt

6. Do 10 minutes of burpees/pushups/situps/whatever makes you and your body sweat

7. Call a friend for ten minutes and tell them that you love them

8. Take a nap or hit snooze. Isn’t sleep the answer for everything?

9. Cancel plans, because you don’t have to be everywhere all of the time, and saying “no” is just as important as saying “yes.”

10. Leave the dishes in the sink–you can only do what you can do

11. Invite your friends over for a potluck

12. Have amazing sex

13. Do something artistic, but mindless. I like my feminist coloring book for down time.

14. Turn your phone off

15. And your computer

16. And your tablet

17. Meditate for five minutes

18. Take a drive somewhere that makes you feel nostalgic

19. Listen to your favorite album from a happy time

20. Act like a tourist in your city by trying something you’ve always wanted to do, but never have the time for.

21. Get a massage (even if this means begging a fellow ally to swap you rubdowns)

22. Watch some YouTube tutorials on how to do your makeup, fix your hair, and take a million selfies to remind yourself that you’re beautiful

23. Snuggle your pet, and if you don’t have one, ask a friend to bring one over!

Take the time to honor yourself every day. It doesn’t have to cost much, it doesn’t have to be on this list, but it has to happen, because you’re worth it.
